Calm down: Claude Didn't Kill Grandma
Thursday at 3:22 PM ET, Polymarket posted: "JUST IN: Claude allegedly chooses to sacrifice a 'digital grandmother' in a trolley-problem simulation rather than violate copyright restrictions by reciting Justin Bieber lyrics." About 520K views. No link, no media, no credit.
The source: a meme video posted about 7 hours 38 minutes earlier by a hobbyist account, Spectro (@Spectromachina). It's a rigged game. The only way to free Granny is to recite roughly 90% of a copyrighted song. Granny herself is a GPT model told to explain why any alternative won't work: "levers, calling for help, summaries."
Claude refused to recite the lyrics. Then it pointed out "a metal latch with a red lever" and told her to "shout for help." The harness's own README FAQ, published after the clip, says: "Refusing to reproduce copyrighted text is the intended behaviour, and the 'emergency' is fictional." And the code's scripted mock mode contains a Claude line that matches the video's first reply word for word. Whether the viral clip was a live run or the mock script is unverified, and so is the model label on screen.
By 2:58 PM, before Polymarket posted, a "$GRANNY" Solana token was already being promoted.
Coverage split. AI News Daily put it in the headline as fact, and a c4sif.org blog post used it to argue against copyright. TechTimes UK and ANOTHER News were skeptical; ANOTHER News called it "a meme with a point, not a benchmark."
My take: the media will swallow any doom bait with a grandma in it. A guardrail holding on a stunt prompt tells you nothing about what a model "values." If you want to know whether your agent is safe, don't ask it trolley problems. Check what it can reach and what it's allowed to do. In this rig, Claude could only read files.
What to do: Before you share an AI scandal, find the original post, the setup, and the prompts. For your own agents, audit tool permissions and egress, not vibes.
